The Himalayan kingdom of Bhutan slopes down from peaks over 7,000 metres high to the Indian plains where the Brahmaputra flows. It is a country roughly the size of Switzerland, but has less than a million inhabitants. It is called “Druk Yul”, meaning “land of the thunder dragon”.
The northern part of the country, with the Himalayan range and the four mountain passes that opened up to Tibet until 1960, is an almost uninhabited area, while in the centre and south, with the monsoon arriving between June and September, we find lush nature and subtropical jungles.
Connected only by flights from India, Nepal and Thailand, Bhutan is a difficult country to reach, partly due to the limited number of seats on aeroplanes. Tourism is restricted, in the sense that the government sets in advance the number of tourists it will admit the following year. The local guides are very good, but they only speak English.
In addition to the beautiful scenery, Bhutan's distinctive features include the Dzongs, large castles built mostly in the 17th century, which serve as fortresses, monasteries, schools, administrative centres and barracks. The “Cathedral Dzong” is in Punakha, while the “Government Dzong” is in Thimpu, the city where the king resides.
