Day 4: Bike the Appian Way

Leave behind the bustle of modern Rome and journey into its ancient heart on an e-bike tour of the Appian Way and the Catacombs. After a private transfer from your accommodation to the starting point of the activity, hop on your E-bike and reach the edge of the Eternal City, where time slows and over 2,000 years of history unfold beneath your wheels. Ride your e-bike along the Via Appia Antica, the legendary Roman road that once connected the capital to the farthest provinces of the empire. Follow your expert guide through cypress-lined paths, crumbling aqueducts, and timeless ruins, enjoying a unique mix of nature, archaeology, and adventure. Along the way, admire landmarks such as the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, Porta San Sebastiano, the Baths of Caracalla, and the Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella, as well as stretches of peaceful countryside scattered with ancient tombs and villas.

The tour’s highlight is a guided visit to one of Rome’s ancient Christian catacombs, where early believers once gathered in secrecy. Descend into the cool, dim tunnels to explore frescoes, inscriptions, and sarcophagi that tell stories of faith and endurance. This extraordinary journey, from open landscapes to the quiet depths below, reveals Rome’s history in all its enduring beauty. For the rest of the day we suggest delving deeper into Roman history by taking a walk into the Campo Marzio district to discover Rome’s Egyptian heritage. The area hosted the Iseum Campense, once the city’s largest sanctuary dedicated to Egyptian deities. Built during the late Republic and expanded under Caligula and Domitian, it featured sphinxes, statues, and obelisks some of which, like the one now in Piazza Navona, originated here. Today, remnants are visible along Via di San Stefano del Cacco and via del Pie di Marmo. At Piazza della Minerva, antiquity meets Baroque art in Bernini’s elephant carrying a small Egyptian obelisk in front of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, a mystical symbol of ancient knowledge. Nearby, the Pantheon square features another obelisk from Heliopolis, aligned with the dome to reflect cosmic harmony. Excavations near Piazza San Luigi dei Francesi and Piazza di Sant’Eustachio reveal additional Egyptian influences, from buried obelisks to granite basins reused from Imperial baths. The tour culminates at Piazza Navona, where Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers is crowned by a 17-meter pink granite obelisk from Aswan, once standing between the temples of Isis and Serapis, blending sacred tradition, Baroque artistry, and imperial history in a breathtaking finale. Overnight in Rome.
